-Axes & Fokos-

These are axes inspired by Shepherd's Axes, or Fokos, that I have made. They originate in Eastern Europe and are meant for self-defense while walking in the countryside. The axe itself is comfortable in the hand, and the edge is unsharpened for the walker's safety. Think of them a bit more like a war hammer or mace in terms of impact.

I make them to custom length. The height of your hip bone is a good estimate for most people. I make them out of local curly maple, which I finish in pure boiled linseed oil, a very durable finish that takes a few weeks to cure properly. The axe head and footspike are made out of my own handforged damascus in 15N20 / 1084 steels. You can see the transition in the steel where the edge, backspike and tip of the footspike are hardened. The collets and cap are Sterling silver, with an interlace pattern taken from a Swedish runestone carving.

It generally will take 4-8 weeks for me to complete the axes. I wish I could make them faster, but I make everything by hand from raw materials: the damascus from scratch, welding the axe together, forging it to shape, heat treating, grinding, polishing and etching, carving the wood to shape, casting the Sterling silver fittings from my own original wax carvings & molds, very careful fitting & assembly and sanding the wood to #0000 fine steel wool before oiling.

But an heirloom accessory like this will be treasured! :)
